HOLLYWOOD ON WAY TO WALES

14:00 - 02 October 2002

Hollywood is starting its journey to Wales after the Assembly cleared the way for a development which could create 7,000 jobs.

Legendary film director Sir Richard Attenborough is behind the plans which could see movie stars flocking to a location in Llanharan, near Bridgend.

The sticking point was the need for a new junction on the M4 which was against Assembly policy.

But yesterday the Assembly Government gave the junction the green light.

Now Rhondda Cynon Taff and Vale of Glamorgan councils will have the final say but both are thought to be in favour of the scheme.

The film studio project has been dubbed Llanharanwood and would be based on a former opencast pit.

A consortium called Dragon International Studios is behind the plans.

Along with a film studio there are plans for an international film academy and a leisure park based on attractions such as Universal Studios in Florida.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan said of the project: ''The Llanilid film studio is a unique development and I am very pleased we have been able to find a way forward which paves the way for this major investment to become a reality.

The project was welcomed by Swansea West AM and Assembly Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies.

''The television and film industry is a growing sector in Wales and this studio complex has the potential to enable us to become major players in the UK and international film industry, '' he said.

''It could also create many hundreds of jobs in the area.'' Wales is already on the Hollywood map thanks to Tomb Raider 2, starring Angelina Jolie, which is shooting in Caernarfon.
